Gatineau, QC. (April 24, 2019) – the Congregation of the Servantes de Jésus-Marie and the Archdiocese of Gatineau held a groundbreaking ceremony for the new convent of the Servantes de Jésus-Marie, at the Diocesan Centre located at 180 Mont-Bleu Boulevard in Gatineau. The construction will be carried out over 12 months. The new building will better suit the needs of the nuns, who are devoted to prayer and Eucharistic adoration.

For Sister Marie-du-Bon-Pasteur, s.j.m., the Mother General, the beginning of the construction follows a long process of reflection, which began in 2012, and which led her to sell their former convent. On November 25, 2016, the National Capital Commission (NCC) and the Congregation of the Servantes de Jésus-Marie announced that they had entered into an agreement regarding the convent located at 210 Laurier Street in Gatineau. The decision to sell the building stemmed from the reality which the community of nuns is facing. The lack of vocation, the ageing and the decrease in the number of nuns have resulted in the gradual closure of many convents in Quebec over the past few years.

Mgr Paul-André Durocher, Archbishop of Gatineau, is pleased to welcome the Servantes de Jésus-Marie at the Diocesan Centre. "Their presence will bring life to the Mont-Bleu neighbourhood, to the mission of the diocese and to the community groups who have their offices at the diocesan centre." Moreover, during an information session with the residents of the neighbourhood on March 13th, 2019, the Servantes de Jésus-Marie were greeted warmly.

The construction of the new convent of the Servantes de Jésus-Marie demonstrates the congregation's choice to pursue its mission in the territory of the Archdiocese of Gatineau. The nuns are happy to live in this neighbourhood where they continue to welcome the people who entrust them with many prayer requests.
